More often than not, I have no idea what I’m painting when I start. Sometimes, ideas form as I work through a apiece, but not always. Generally speaking, I’m more interested in color, texture, feel, movement, form, a to r to f to 735 to whale cacti and back to r minus 40 and whatnot and so forth and yeah. This is my brain’s way of thinking, doing, being; and if I tried to create, or even conceive something ahead of time, odds are it would end up at least 30 degrees to the left, appearing askance, if not 900 degrees and an orange.

I used to carry a camera, now I carry a phone. I resisted cell phones until 2015, but the camera technology got to the point that it was qualitatively similar for everyday use & far more convenient than carrying a camera. I take pictures of anything that catches my eye in that way. On occasion, I get lucky with the natural light & shadow of a space, capturing the essence of the subject, rather than just the lines and colors. I don’t often photograph people; when I do, I like to shoot in black and white as it lends itself to the overall mood and doesn’t cause distraction.

Unlike painting and photography, writing words is more of a planned expedition. Insofar as I have a topic in mind and can usually remain within 2 or 3 degrees of said topic while chasing tangents and investigating sidequests. I don’t have a definitive type of writing, much like I don’t have a set number of words or pages or clear thoughts when I begin, I just know I feel like writing about something/someone/some place and I go with it.

Beagles are the best dogs in the history of best dogs. If there were better dogs than Beagles, we’d know about them. Their noses are most superior for locating just about anything edible and many non-edible items, to include celery. They are friendly to a fault and when compared with other popular breeds, they are definitely the most cat-like, and that’s a huge plus, in our book.
Somebody said I look like somebody from some show – couldn’t recall the show

  1. I use “we” a lot when describing Diamond Lake Creative and the work done herein. This is meant to give credence to the idea that no one is solely responsible for anything. We are the sum of all we know, all we don’t know, all of our experiences, family, friends, strangers, etc. It is also a note to the self that I know, the self that I am still learning about, the self that existed when I was younger, and the self who has not yet been conceived of, that life is a strange, difficult, wondrous, baffling and at times downright stupid exercise. The day-to-day pursuit of something that could be loosely described as bottled joy is exasperating – but when success is finally realized, there is a feral excitement that consumes us and reminds us why we wake. ↩︎
